2023 had members going to Fall VSO meeting(Scarlett's reflection made it into page 4 of The Bridge) in Lynchburg; an ice cream social with speaker Kristan Dollar, founder of Magnolia Rose, a nonprofit to help victims of human trafficking; on Veterans Day a tour of the manse at the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and dinner at the Depot; a Secret Rose gift exchange where members had to buy a toy that would be representative of what their assigned member liked as a child (there were clues given) and then after members opened the gifts all 15 toys were donated to the WHSV TV3 Toy Convoy. In January we enjoyed a luncheon where we heard Sean Smith speak about email safety and Medicare fraud. Several of us were "Kappa On The Go" by supporting Cassy Maxton Whitacre's production of Sympathy Jones. Nadine James, co-author of Memoir Your Way zoomed into our March meeting, where we also assembled 7 Journey Bags from member donations.
2022 started out with a "Kappa On the Go" event at Barren Ridge Vineyards. Six Kappa members attended Fall Board in September. Dee Hoy, Susan Schuckman, Margaret Shifflett and Anne Perdue shared their various travel adventures at the Oct. 2022 meeting. Journey bags were also assembled at that time. Kappa donated several Thanksgiving food boxes to Wenonah Elementary School and sponsored 2 students for Christmas. In March we heard from Lucy Marion and Lindsay Campbell about Teachers for Tomorrow. Seven Kappa members attended the VSO convention at Natural Bridge and Susan Schukman served as convention chair. In May we awarded two grants-in-aid to Summer Wallace of RHS (going to Bridgewater College) and Braxton Jones of Spotswood High School (going to Randolph College). There was also a memorial PPT shown for Margaret Shifflett who we lost unexpectedly in December. A fundraiser was held in June at the Mount Solon Creamery.

Highlights from the 2021-22 year included Margaret Shifflett's quilts and photographs were featured in the Fine Arts Gallery during the VSO Leadership Seminar in March; a Relay for Life team; at the May meeting new officers were installed and 3 Grants-in-aid awarded to Tess Quick, Reagan Frazier and Hannah E. Whitehair (pictured); "Kappa on the Go" visit to BrydgeWorks Glass to make stained glass ornaments; Margaret Shifflett, Julia Van de Water and Anne Perdue representing at the international Convention in New Orleans in July.
Covid 19 didn't stop Kappa in 2020-21. Zoom meetings were held including the first annual cookie exchange by zoom. New members were inducted in the fall virtually... Wendy Hull - 8th grade math teacher at SMS; Rebecca Cannaday - ITRT for NRE and WMS; Karen Fansler Ryan - retired from Harrisonburg City Schools (not pictured), as well as in the spring in person...Cassy Maxton-Whitacre - Theater Arts Instructor at SVGS. Kappa delivered 12 journey bags to Shenandoah Valley Social Services. Since 2017 60 bags have been donated. Two Grants-in-aid were awarded at the May 2021 meeting. The recipients were Annabelle Terry and Macie Nester. Julia Van de Water, Susan Schuckman, Margaret Shifflett and Marshia Elliott at the International Conference in San Antonio, Texas.
Courtney Hallacher and Cheryl Sams were awarded grants from the VA Alliance for Education for the 2019-20 school year. Kappa continued to participate in the MaDee Project's Breakfast with Santa by providing a craft center. At the January luncheon meeting, Dr. Kimberly Beckerdite, VA State Vice President, was the program speaking about "DKG First." Laurie Niestrath, Kim Collett and Dr. Angela Wilson were inducted at that time. Laurie is an adjunct faculty member at Piedmont Community College, specifically working with Plugged in Virginia as a Skilled Trades Adult Educator. Kim is the principal of Charterhouse School in Edinburg, Virginia. Dr. Angela Wilson is the Director of Teacher Education at Mary Baldwin University. Allison Thompson of Wilson Memorial High School was the recipient of the Downs-Ryerson Grant-in-aid for 2020.

At the May 2019 meeting, Amy Cerminara and Heather Cooper were inducted as Kappa’s newest members. Amy and Heather teach at BMMS. Bea Morris was awarded her fifty year membership certificate in Delta Kappa Gamma. She was also recognized for this membership milestone at the state convention held in Charlottesville in late April. Bea is a retired English teacher from Staunton City Schools. She has been active at all levels of the society, particularly on the State Legislative Committee. Sandy Proctor, Treasurer, presents the $1,000 Grant-in-aid to Riverheads High School senior Annalice Puckett. Annalice plans on pursuing elementary education at Mary Baldwin University in the fall.
“Circles of excellence – Cheers for 90 Years” was the theme of the Virginia State Convention in Charlottesville April 2019. Kappa was represented by Susan Schukman, Anne Perdue, Julia Van de Water, Lynne Carson, Susan Doughty, Margaret Shifflett and Scarlett Kiser. Anne kept things running smoothly as convention chair. She also received a rose bush as she was installed as the Nominations Committee chairperson for the next biennium. Lynne and Susan S. manned the registration desk. Margaret participated in the Fine Arts Fair displaying her quilt.
At the March 2019 meeting, Emily Kilgore, WWPL museum educator, presented on women in WWI.
Bea Morris is recognized for 50 years of membership at the January 2019 brunch. She is presented with a pin by Susan Schuckman (chapter president) and Vicki Newburn (state president). Vicki spoke about the ABC's of IOTA State.

Susan Schuckman is installed as Kappa's President for 2018-2020. Heidi Whitecotton and Bess Trainium spoke about their STEM classes at Stewart Middle School at the November 2017 meeting. Members donated and put together seven journey bags. Anne Perdue delivered these to DSS.
At Oct. 2017 meeting, members participate in Sharon Spalding's boot camp for cancer survivors and then get a tour of Murphy-Deming College of Health Sciences (MBC).
At the Fall 2017 Executive Board Meeting, Kappa sold snacks as a fundraiser for the GIA and Marcia Elliott received an IOTA Award from President Vicki Newburn for inspiring SERC VA Delegation to wear beach hats. Anne Perdue and Susan Schuckman attended the Leadership Academy in June 2017.

Seven Kappa members attended the convention in Richmond April 28th-30th including Julia Van de Water, Scarlett Kiser, Susan Doughty, Bea Morris, Marcia Elliott, Anne Perdue and Lynne Carson. Marcia and Lynne showed off Margaret Shifflett’s quilt in the Fine Arts Gallery. Susan, incoming IOTA President Vicki Newburn and Anne presented a workshop. Anne was installed as a member of the Nominations Committee. Lynne, Kappa President and Anne, Blue Ridge CC Chair process in to the President’s banquet as Marcia served as a hostess.
Kappa celebrated 70 years at the January 28, 2017, brunch meeting. Linda Hall, Iota State President, spoke to members about the honor and benefits of membership. Ann Perdue presented a re-orientation for members and prospective members alike. Other guests included Mary Mehaffey, IOTA State 2nd VP, and Cheryl Sams and Vicky Conyers, teachers at WHS and RHS respectively.
Sarah Nicklas and Nicole Ocheltree shared their individual experiences as foster parents at the December meeting. Members then put together Journey Bags that were delivered to the Augusta County Social Services office.

Sharon Spalding, Susan Doughty and Kim Norman provided "detective" refreshments at the March meeting. During our MSI activity Sandy Proctor's memento was her grandmother's change purse. She recalls her grandmother giving each of the grandchildren a silver dollar on their birthday. Marilyn Long brought her two teaching bells. One was given to her by her parents when she became a teacher and the other was presented to her upon retirement.
